Immunisation
Childhood immunisation is the cornerstone of ‘Well Child’ services. It is important that all children receive their immunisations at the appropriate time to ensure babies and children are fully protected against the infectious diseases covered by the national immunisation programme.Vaccination is one of the most effective health interventions we have available – and it is free. Two new vaccines have been added to the list - Prevenar (pneumococcal) for babies and for young girls the vaccine to prevent cervical cancer.
Immunisations are due at 6 weeks old, 3 months, 5 months, 10 months, 15months, 4 years and 11 years.
In addition all people over aged 65 are able to have the early flu vaccination free of charge. Those with chronic medical conditions under the age of 65 can also have a free flu vaccination. If you are working in situations where you contact with ‘the public’ it is strongly recommended that you are vaccinated.
The MCHT general practices have recall systems which will remind parents/caregivers when the child’s immunisations are due. If you have and queries about childhood immunisation, speak to the practice team or phone Immunisation Advisory Centre 0800 IMMUNE (0800 466863).
The over 65’s and the people with chronic conditions will also be reminded to call into their GP for the winter flu vaccination.
